Investors sought for an arena in Conneticut

The Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA), the quasi-public Connecticut State agency responsible for operation and maintenance of the XL Center in Downtown Hartford, is exploring options for attracting private investment for a proposed US$250 million makeover of the arena.

CRDA is looking to undertake a significant transformation of the XL Center in order to ensure the facility’s long-term sustainability. A 2015 study by SCI Architects concluded that at least 100,000 square feet of additional space is necessary to bring the XL Center up to modern venue standards, improve circulation, meet certain ADA and building code requirements and enhance the overall fan experience. SCI also concluded that sufficient space to meet these needs is available in the large atrium, unused retail space and a portion of the parking garage located adjacent to the XL Center.

The XL Center, originally opened as the Hartford Civic Center in 1975. The 16,500-seat arena is currently home to the AHL’s Hartford Wolfpack and hosts approximately 25 UCONN men’s and women’s basketball and men’s hockey games each year. In addition, the arena hosts a variety of other events each year, including concerts, family shows, motor sports and other sporting events, trade shows and community events. A 70,000 square foot exhibition hall is used for trade shows, conventions, banquets, meetings and other events.

Since CRDA assumed control of the building in 2012 through a lease agreement with the City of Hartford, it has invested nearly US$40 million in the building to modernize mechanical systems, repair the ice-making system, upgrade elevators and security systems, improve concessions facilities, construct new premium seating and improve accessibility and circulation in the aging facility.
