The New South Wales government has confirmed it has acquired the ANZ Stadium, built for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, from boutique fund manager Infrastructure Capital Group.
The Government’s commitment to the redevelopment of ANZ Stadium will ensure this iconic venue continues to host many of the nation’s biggest events and most iconic sporting moments into the future.
The transformation of ANZ Stadium will begin in the current term of government by 2019. The redeveloped Stadium will be complemented by other Government projects already announced that will improve transport links from all over Sydney.
VenuesLive Management Services, also owned by Infrastructure Capital Group, will continue to operate the stadium.
Before the deal closure in early July, NSW Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres had announced the appointment of a new board for ANZ Stadium, which was chaired by Christine McLoughlin with Sharon Skeggs as marketing and advertising professional, Wallaby Phil Kearns and executive director for Office of Sport Paul Doorn.
Infrastructure Capital Group managing director Tom Laidlaw said
"The stadium has been part of the Diversified Infrastructure Trust since 2007 and it is a great investment in terms of improving a business and delivering strong returns. We picked it up off ANZ Bank and the lending group and back then it was up to the late 20s in the number of events held per year. Last year it did about EBIT US$29 million and held about 45 events."
Ayres stated:
"There will be no change in the day to day operations, and the stadium's current management will continue to manage the business under a third-party agreement. ANZ Stadium is now a feature piece in the Sydney network of venues owned by the public, including Pirtek Stadium, Allianz Stadium and the Sydney Cricket Ground."
