The Société des Ports du Détroit, formed by Meridiam, Caisse des Dépôts, the Nord de France and Côte d'Opale Regional Chambers of Commerce and Industry, and the Grand Port Maritime de Dunkerque, has inaugurated the new port of Calais in France.
Located in the department of Pas-de-Calais, the port project provides the Calais-Dover link, connecting continental Europe to the British Isles. With an investment of EUR863 million (USD1.02 billion), the port was under construction for 6 years. The Société des Ports du Détroit is responsible for the construction, finance and operation of the port for a 50-year concession period. The official operation date is scheduled for October 4, 2021.
The design takes under consideration the long-term effects of climate change, by protecting the port area from rising sea levels and preserving the local environment. In total, the surface area of the port infrastructure has doubled with the new 65 hectares of open space, from which 45 hectares have been reclaimed from the sea. The port also includes a 3.2 km long breakwater, a 90-hectare navigable basin, three wharves as well as a space for the integration of rail-road-sea intermodal infrastructures. Approximately 3,500 people worked daily on the site.
