Lázaro Cárdenas Port Administration has signed a concession agreement with SSA Mexico, a subsidiary of Carrix Group, to develop a car port terminal in Isla Cayacal, Lázaro Cárdenas (Mexico).
The new terminal will be developed on an area of 42 ha and it will include a 600 m dock. The new facility will have rail connection and it will be specialized in car transport. The concession will have a period of 30 years.
The project will be developed in phases, the phase I involves the development of a 21 ha terminal with capacity to handle 400.000 vehicles per year. The phase II will expand the terminal to 42 ha and it will have capacity to handle 750.000 vehicles per year.
The total project investment is estimated at US$51.6 million for the phase I.
The Port of Lázaro Cárdenas is the largest Mexican seaport and one of the largest seaports in the Pacific Ocean basin, with an annual traffic capacity of around 25 million tones of cargo and 2,200,000 TEU's. The port is expected to become a major container facility due to congestion at the U.S. ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach and its relative proximity to major cities such as Chicago, Kansas City, and Houston.
