DP World to exit Indonesian port concession in 2019

DP World Limited has announced that the company has reached a decision not to renew its operating contract for PT Terminal Petikemas Surabaya (TPS) in Indonesia at the end of the agreement in 2019.

DP World is a 49% shareholder in TPS, which represents a gross capacity of 2.1 million TEUs (twenty-foot containers) out of 85 million TEUs for the group.

There will be no material financial impact on the Group as a consequence of this action. The port operator feels disappointed by the government’s renewal terms and that its contributions in the economy are ‘not fully recognized’.

Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, DP World Group Chairman and CEO, said:

“DP World, alongside other global terminal operators, has built world class port infrastructure in Indonesia that serves the needs of shipping lines, manufacturers, traders and consumers in the region. Over the last 20 years, Surabaya has benefited from DP World’s state-of-the-art, productivity enhancing systems, training and development programmes, as well as the company’s security, safety and environmental best practices, and we are proud of our success there. We have invested significantly in the terminal infrastructure, which has created jobs and contributed to the growth of both the port and the region.

It is unfortunate that the significant positive contributions made by global terminal operators in Indonesia have not been fully recognized, despite our successful track record. We are therefore disappointed that the operating contract renewal terms offered by the Indonesian authorities did not meet our threshold for continued investment. Adhering to strict financial discipline has been crucial to the growth of DP World and on that basis we are not able to renew the agreement beyond 2019. The transfer of operations will be in accordance to the terms and conditions of the contract.

When investing in trade infrastructure and services, our goal is to serve our global customers while making a positive economic impact in the countries in which we work and delivering returns to our shareholders. We remain committed to investing in Asia and all geographies that have an appetite for foreign direct investment.”

IFC commits up to $200 million to IFC Emerging Asia Fund with investors from Fiji and Korea

IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, has committed up to US$200 million to the IFC Emerging Asia Fund (EAF), which has reached a first close. IFC is joined by the Korea Development Bank (KDB) and the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF). Central to the EAF is mobilizing additional capital in emerging markets of the Asia region, given the scale of investment, innovation, technological development and employment creation required for sustainable development in many low and middle income countries in the region falls beyond the range of the public sector, making the private sector central to finding and financing the development solutions that are needed.   Investments by the EAF will be aligned to IFC’s strategy for the region, which includes a focus on addressing the infrastructure deficit, and at the same time it will also help investee companies raise standards, improve risk mitigation and generate value.   The new global architecture for international development, the Sustainable Development Goals, launched at the United Nations in 2015, highlights that financing sustainable development requires low and middle income countries tap new sources of capital from both private and public sources, including leveraging global private capital to most skillful effect. Two thirds of the world’s poorest people live in emerging Asia and yet it is the engine room of global growth being the fastest growing region and the largest continental economy by GDP in the world. This growth is a function of favorable dynamics such as the continued need for enhanced infrastructure, the emergence of a rapidly growing middle class and commitments by many governments in the region to political and economic reform.  Combined, these dynamics have created significant opportunities for investment in the region including China, India, Indonesia, Philippines and Asian frontier markets such as Vietnam and Myanmar.  Read more
