The city of Sanya has selected Zaha Hadid Architects as the winner of the competition for the design of the city’s new harborside cultural district in Hainan, China.
The project plans include the following features:
Development Scale: The new project spans 409,000 sq m and aims to become a vibrant cultural hub in Sanya. It is designed to host a variety of activities such as performing arts, theater performances, exhibition galleries, conferences, and commercial trade fairs.
Architectural Design: The buildings' fluid design seamlessly merges the tropical waters of Sanya Bay with the cityscape. A central axis divides the roofs into layered structures, creating a dynamic architectural appearance. This design approach softens the overall volume of the structures.
Location and Connectivity: Situated at the entrance of Sanya's harbor, the district enjoys connectivity to the city’s automobile and tram networks. It is strategically linked to residential areas and hotel districts.
Roof Structure: The roofs, inspired by the movement of sails in the breeze, cascade from the central axis. These roofs frame the entrances of the performing arts theater and conference center, and public terraces offer panoramic views of the harbor.
Public Spaces: The design integrates public plazas, gardens, marinas, and a harborside boardwalk, enhancing the district’s appeal.
Mixed-Use Facilities: The district includes residences, and hotels, as well as shopping and dining facilities at its core, providing a comprehensive urban experience.
Climate Considerations: Considering Sanya’s tropical climate with monsoons, the design takes natural factors into account. Orientation, composition, and landscaping are adjusted to optimize natural ventilation and sunlight, enhancing energy efficiency.
Sustainable Features: The architecture incorporates low-carbon design, procurement, construction, and operational strategies. This includes the use of photovoltaics and rainwater collection systems integrated into the roof areas. Overhanging eaves provide shelter and seawater heat exchangers are used for cooling.
Smart Management: A smart building management system is utilized to optimize shading, lighting, and ventilation. Local and recycled materials, including certified sustainable timber cladding, are prioritized, aligning with eco-friendly practices.
