The Municipality of Curitiba in Brazil, through the Municipal Department of the Environment (SMMA), has begun the public consultation of the public-private partnership (PPP) project in the solid waste sector.
The object of the administrative concession is the provision of public services of urban cleaning and collection and transportation of municipal solid waste. The term of the concession term is 15 years and its estimated value is BRL2.76 billion (US$866 million)
The new waste collection, transport and disposal concession will be carried out on a design, build, finance and operate (DBFO) basis.
The project was structured by the International Finance Corporation - IFC, which entered into contract to provide consulting services with the City. Besides, as we reported in September 2015, Mott MacDonald is providing technical and strategic advice to IFC. The appointment is financed by Brazil's Private Sector Participation (PSP) programme. The consultancy's services are expected to be delivered across the four main phases of project feasibility and procurement until the end of 2016.
Curitiba is the capital and largest municipality of the Brazilian state of Paraná, with a land area of 430 km² and an estimated population of 1.75 million inhabitants. The city is under pressure to develop a financially and commercially sound waste management solution that is both environmentally and socially sustainable.
