The Northampton County, Pa., General Purpose Authority and Kriger Construction Inc. have signed the contract for the Northampton bridges PPP project in Pennsylvania.
Currently, the low-traffic-volume bridges carrying local roads over waterways average 40 ft in length and 24 ft in width. The project involves the replacement of twenty-eight concrete, stone and steel bridges averaging 70 years in age and the rehabilitation of another five stone-arch bridges, including some that are more than 100 years old.
The project's budget is estimated at US$37.5 million. According to Northampton County Executive John Brown, the use of the PPP model could lower the cost of bridge repairs by 30 %. Construction works are scheduled to begin next year and be completed by 2020.
As we reported in mid October 2016, local contractor Kriger Construction was selected as preferred bidder for the project. The county council agreed to a contract with the authority by a 7-0 vote.
