The National Authority for Tunnels (NAT) of Egypt has announced that NGE with its rail expertise subsidiary TSO has signed a contract to help build a 330 km high-speed railway in Egypt. The rail line is a part of a project that involves the development of a 2,000 km high-speed rail network that will connect 60 cities throughout the country.
The railway will connect the Red Sea port of Ain Sokhna to Borg al-Arab near Alexandria on the Mediterranean coast, running through the Cairo satellite town 6th of October City. Under the project, NGE will provide its experience, human and material resources to local companies Orascom and Arab Contractors. The project will provide about 90% of Egyptians with access to high-speed public transport and will replace road freight transport with rail. The high-speed network will be able to transport 30 million people a year.
Work on the project is planned to begin in early 2023 and will require the mobilization of up to 500 people on site.
The National Authority for Tunnels has signed a conditions document with Deutsche Bahn and El Sewedy Electric for the management and operation of the rapid electric train network in Egypt.
