Contract Awarded for Rapid Transit Phase 2 Extension project in USA

The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) has picked Bechtel to provide construction management services for the Bay Area Rapid Transit’s (BART) Silicon Valley Phase II, a six-mile extension with four stations that will connect North San Jose and the city of Santa Clara to the BART system.

The new rail line will be Santa Clara County's largest infrastructure project and is expected to serve nearly 55,000 passengers each weekday by 2040. Bechtel Infrastructure Corporation has a 10-year contract to manage and oversee construction starting in 2024. Previously, Bechtel led the design and construction of the original BART system and Phase I of the Silicon Valley Line, which has been operational since 2020.

Phase II is planned to include:

  • 28th Street/Little Portugal Station
  • Downtown San José Station
  • Diridon Station
  • Santa Clara Station

Project Benefits include:

  • Direct transit from San José and Santa Clara to Bay Area destinations.
  • Avoid traffic and enjoy a quick, comfortable journey on BART.
  • The single-bore method minimizes disruptions.
  • Opportunity for equitable, mixed-use development around transit.
