The Malcolm Reading Consultants has announced that Kengo Kuma & Associates (KKAA) won a competition to design a visitor center for Butrint National Park, a Unesco World Heritage Site located in Albania.
KKAA will work on the project with CHwB in Albania, as well as iMEPS Engineering & Consulting and GE-D Engineering. Following an international competition the group were selected from a shortlist that included teams headed by architects headquartered in France, Finland and the UK.
The center will be the gateway to the park and will help to cope with the growing number of tourists visiting it. It will also serve as an educational forum and gathering place for the local community. The center consists of several limestone roofs over a massive wood and steel structure. Two centers are planned: one will act as a "mountain gate" connecting visitors to the most natural part of the site, and a second "archaeological gate" connecting the pier on Lake Butrint to that on the Vivari Canal.
A visitor center for Butrint National Park is planned to open in September 2025.
