Construction started for USD 273 million Airport project in Indonesia

The Indonesian government has started the construction phase for an airport in a planned new capital city, Nusantara.

The airport, valued at IDR 4.3 trillion (US$273 million), is situated approximately 43 km away from the center of Nusantara. It will be linked via an existing road and a 23 km toll road. The airport is designed with a 3,000 m runway, catering to wide-body aircraft. The terminal area will encompass 7,350 sq m. The 347-ha airport is set to be fully operational by December 2024, with limited operations commencing in June.

Nusantara, officially known as the Capital City of Nusantara, is the future capital of Indonesia. It is located on the east coast of the island of Borneo, specifically in the province of East Kalimantan. The government of Indonesia has cited several reasons for moving the capital city from Jakarta. Jakarta is sinking due to rising sea levels and is also densely populated and polluted. The new capital city is located in a more central location in Indonesia and is also closer to major trade routes.
