Iraq's Ministry of Transport has appointed a consortium for the construction of the US$17.5 billion Baghdad Metro Rail Project.

The winning consortium, known as the Vaskhod & Wonter International Capital Coalition, is responsible for the design, implementation, operation, maintenance, financing, and eventual transfer of ownership (DBOMFT) of the Baghdad Metro project. The Vaskhod & Wonter International Capital Coalition is composed of:

  • French Groups: Systra and SNCF
  • Spanish Companies: Alstom, Talgo, and SENER
  • Turkish Construction Specialists
  • German Bank: Deutsche Bank

The planned Baghdad Metro network is 148 km long with seven lines and 64 stations connecting the city's key sites and neighbourhoods. The project will cover most areas of Baghdad and establish connections with newly developed cities such as Al-Jawahir, Ali Al-Wardi, and New Sadr City. The metro network covers 85% of the city including all holy sites, colleges and tourism districts in Iraq.
