The Hellenic Republic Asset Development Fund (HRADF), announced that the agreement for the concession of Egnatia Odos Motorway was signed between the Greek State, the Fund and NEA EGNATIA ODOS S.A. as the concessionaire.
The motorway infrastructure is set to undergo significant enhancements, marking the first instance of extensive maintenance on the Egnatia Odos Motorway and the three connecting axes linking Greece with Albania, North Macedonia, and Bulgaria. Over five years from the start of the concession, investments exceeding EUR 420 million (US$ 452 million) will be allocated for motorway and axis upgrades. One of the key projects includes the modernization of the Chalastra – Evzoni road to meet contemporary motorway standards, fulfilling a longstanding demand from citizens and institutions in Central Macedonia.
Throughout the 35-year concession period, comprehensive maintenance activities totaling EUR 1.8 billion (US$ 1.9 billion) are planned, encompassing road surface renovations, major technical structure upkeep (such as bridges and tunnels), as well as horizontal and vertical signage and marking replacements, and the installation of metal safety barriers. Moreover, the construction and operation of 16 Motorist Service Stations (MSS) and the establishment of 12 modern parking and recreational areas along the motorway are scheduled. The concession agreement for the Egnatia Motorway, covering the primary motorway (700 km) and three vertical axes (225 km), is expected to be finalized by the end of 2024.
