The government of Antioquia, Colombia's second major competitive region after Bogotá, has announced plans to revitalize its railway system with a public-private partnership (PPP) initiative.
The project aims to revive an 80km corridor between the towns of Caldas and Botero.
The National Infrastructure Agency (ANI) conducted financial studies and that concluded that the project is viable.
Sociedad Promotora Ferrocarril de Antioquia, the company created for the project, has now launched a tender process to seek consultants to evaluate the best model to develop the project.
The project would involved the implementation of a bi-modal rail service, which would transport passengers by day and cargo by night. This section would serve municipalities that are close to regional capital Medellín, such as Caldas, Sabaneta, Barbosa and Botero.
The tender documents (in Spanish) are available here. The deadline for submitting proposals is July, 31 and the consultancy services are expected to be awarded in August, 22.
