City in Thailand plans monorail PPP project

Pattaya city administration in the south-east of Thailand is planning to develop an elevated monorail system in Pattaya city. The project is aimed to reduce traffic congestion and connect the city with the government's infrastructure development in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC).

The project involves the construction of nine kilometers of the viaduct with 11 stations connecting Pattaya railway station, Northern Pattaya Road, Pattaya Sai 2 Road, Thap Phraya intersection and Bali Hai Pier. The monorail system will involve an elevated structure made of steel-reinforced concrete, with piers each only 1.8 meters wide holding up the structure.

The project will provide adequate public transport facilities to travel across the city, which will ease the expected tourist influx after the COVID crisis.

Pattaya City has allocated THB 70 million (US$ 2.19 million) for the feasibility study of the project and has hired technical consultants for the design study and environmental impact assessment.

Feasibility study project manager specified that initially three types of rail systems were considered: light rail (tram), monorail and underground rail. But it was agreed that the monorail system will cost less and have less impact than the other two types.

The project may be implemented on the public-private partnership (PPP) model.
