Authorities Outline Action Plans for US$835 Million Canal Project in Colombia

The concessionaire Ecosistemas del Dique has held three days of socialization in the Caribbean region for the restoration of the degraded ecosystems of the Canal del Dique.

This initiative provided a platform to present the institutional strategy aimed at promoting the development of the Canal del Dique ecoregion and to disseminate the risk management plan. Additionally, it facilitated the coordination of joint action plans to address the effects of climate change on the Canal del Dique project.

Led by the concessionaire Ecosistemas del Dique, a Sacyr Concesiones company, the project is entirely focused on environmental and social aspects. The PPP contract, involving an investment of COP3,200 billion (US$835 million), is set to benefit 1.5 million people across the departments of Atlántico, Bolívar, and Sucre. Ecosistemas del Dique will undertake ecosystem restoration, canal maintenance, and other interventions to mitigate flooding risks and enhance the quality of life for residents. The project influences an area of 435, 000 ha, encompassing both marine and continental regions. The Canal del Dique spans a total length of 115 km, stretching from the municipality of Calamar to the Bay of Cartagena in the department of Bolívar.
