The owners of AUD 2.9 billion (USD 2 billion) Sydney Light Rail project announced the opening of the project´s first phase to the public. The opening took place on December 14, 2019. L2 Randwick Line is the 12km route, connecting the Central Business District (CBD) to the wider city, and taking passengers from Circular Quay to Randwick, via the CBD, Central Station and Moore Park. The line features 19 stations.
Trams now run from Circular Quay to Randwick between 5am and 1am seven days a week. At peak times, trams will run approximately every four to eight minutes between Circular Quay and Central, and every eight to twelve minutes between Central and Randwick, from 7am to 7pm every day of the week. This frequency will improve as service patterns and performance are bedded in.
The Randwick Line project also involved the transformation of George Street into a 1.2km pedestrian boulevard between Hunter and Bathurst streets, replacing the former congestion of bus and car traffic.
The new network will move up to 13,500 commuters an hour during peak time, with one coupled tram holding 450 passengers, which is equivalent to nine standard buses.
The project was delivered by ALTRAC Light Rail consists of Transdev Sydney, Alstom Transport Australia, Acciona Infrastructure Australia, Capella Capital and three equity investors through the ALTRAC Light Rail Partnership: John Laing, First State Super and Acciona Concesiones.
The Sydney Light Rail has been a complex project, involving heavy construction across some of the most built-up parts of the city, and requiring close collaboration across a number of stakeholders and project partners, and with local communities.
