The government of Algeria has announced that it will develop new projects under a public-private partnership (PPP) scheme.
Abdelkader Bensalah, Chairman of the National Council, stated that the government can not finance certain projects and that PPPs will permit their development. The government is to promulgate a PPP law soon.
This model will enable the private sector to participate in the projects through their design, financing, construction, operation and maintenance.
One of the first projects that is to be finances as a PPP is the Alger - Houari Boumediene Airport tramway. The project will link Tafourah - Grande Poste, a transfer station serving the Line 1 of the Algiers Metro, the Mosque of Algiers and the Houari Boumediene Airport, also known as Algiers International Airport. The airport is located 16.9 km east southeast of the city. The project will also a include a car park, with a capacity of 5,000 cars.
The World Bank Group and Ithmar Capital, a Moroccan Sovereign Investment Fund, have entered into a memorandum of understanding relating to the establishment of a Green Growth Infrastructure Facility for Africa (GGIF Africa), the first pan-African fund dedicated to green investment in the continent.
