Acciona takes over the metro concession in Brazil

The Government of the State of Sao Paulo in Brazil has announced the award of the Sao Paulo City Metro Line 6 - Orange PPP project to Acciona. The concession for the completion of the works and operation of the metro is scheduled for today, July 7. With the signing of the concession, Acciona will replace Move São Paulo consortium which had suspended works on the line almost four years ago.

The Project, connecting Brasilândia to San Joaquin station will be fifteen (15) km long and will have fifteen (15) stations. The route goes through large university centers and reaches the remote area in the north of the city.

The project was initially launched in 2008, but various issues had paralyzed the construction. The main issue was with the previous consortium responsible for the project, formed by Odebrecht, Queiroz Galvão and UTC. During the police investigation of the Lava Jato operation, the concessionaire could not continue the work, but the transition of the contract to a new company could not be carried out due to legal impediments.

Move São Paulo has completed 15% of the works on the project. The consortium also reached an agreement with Alstom to supply the 22 trains that will be used in the operation, and also with the Mitsubishi group, which would be responsible for the systems. It is not known whether Acciona will honor these commitments or find new contractors.

Now the original contract had been canceled and the contracting authority has negotiated with Acciona the resumption of the works on the metro line. The signing of the contract is scheduled for today and it is expected that the construction works will resume in 90 days. The works will create around 9000 jobs.
