7 international operators show interest to operate Murcia airport

According to sources, seven national and international operators have shown interest to operate the Murcia–Corvera International airport in Spain.

Spanish airports operator, AENA, is understood to be among the interested firms. 

The project was built by Sacyr, who had a concession contract to develop and operate the asset. Later, the regional government of Murcia canceled the concession contract due to delays in the implementation of the project.

The airport, which was completed in 2012, had an investment value of €260 million.

Phasiphae Consultora Internacional and Garrigues Abogados have now carried out a feasibility study to decide the best model to operate the airport.

The airport has a single passenger terminal of 28,500 m² and a single 3,000 x 45 m runway. It will have a capacity of 3 million passengers and 23,000 movements per year upon opening. The terminal is equipped with 9 boarding gates, 25 check-in desks and 4 baggage reclaim belts. The runway has one rapid-exit taxiway (RET) and 4 holding bays.

The recently constructed airport is located between the villages of Corvera, Martínez El Puerto and Valladolises within the municipal district of Murcia and has direct access to the A-30 between Murcia and Cartagena. 

According to sources, the airport cannot viably open until San Javier Airport, which is also located in Murcia, closes.
