It is a subsidiary of Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane, owned by the Italian government, founded in 2000 in accordance with the European Union rail deregulation directive. Trenitalia offers national rail services in Italy and international services to Austria, France, Germany and Switzerland. The company operates both regional and long-distance trains.
